Vaibhav Sooryavanshi turns weakness into strength when bowlers err: Ian Bishop
IPL 2026: Ian Bishop has argued that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has the temperament and method to take on elite bowling in IPL 2026. As India debut talk builds, his record-breaking run for Rajasthan Royals is turning possibility into pressure.
When you are just a 15-year-old in a professional sport, you need to be extraordinarily brilliant with your skill sets to take on the world's best, and Rajasthan Royals’ Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is doing exactly that. The teenage sensation’s fearless approach to tackle top-quality bowling has drawn widespread attention, including praise from former players.
In a tournament known for its intensity and global talent, Sooryavanshi’s rapid rise highlights the growing impact of young players in elite franchise cricket. Former West Indies fast bowler and commentator Ian Bishop believes the youngster’s mindset sets him apart at the highest level.
“I think psychologically, or from a character standpoint, he is very tough because he is taking on many of the world’s best bowlers,” Bishop, ESPNcricinfo Expert, spoke to the media. “So, his psychological make-up is efficient to take on the best in the world. He took on Jasprit Bumrah. Technically, he is unique, with his bat swing more like a baseball-style swing.”
Bishop also pointed out that while Sooryavanshi may have technical vulnerabilities, his ability to counterattack often neutralises them. “It is very hard to say what exactly his weakness is because the back-of-the-length delivery worked against him in the U19 World Cup and against Sunrisers Hyderabad. But if you don’t get it right, those same deliveries are disappearing out of the park,” he added.
INDIA DEBUT ON HORIZON?
Sooryavanshi’s performances underline both his natural talent and adaptability. The Bihar-born batter has already taken on elite bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Arshdeep Singh with remarkable confidence, even scoring first-ball sixes against some of them.
He also became the fastest player in IPL history to reach 400 runs in a single season, getting there in just nine innings at a staggering strike rate of 238.10. One of the standout performers of the season, Sooryavanshi currently sit in the top three of the Orange cap list.
While the teenager continues to shine in franchise cricket, conversations around a potential India debut have intensified. If selected, Sooryavanshi could challenge long-standing records, including Sachin Tendulkar’s mark as the youngest male debutant for India at 16 years and 205 days, and Shafali Verma’s overall record at 15 years, seven months, and 27 days.
For now, his international future remains a matter of speculation. However, given his extraordinary form in IPL 2026, that possibility is rapidly gaining traction. Sooryavanshi will next be in action for Rajasthan Royals against the Delhi Capitals on May 1.
