Sam Altman faces fresh lawsuit as sister files amended complaint in sexual abuse case
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman faces a fresh lawsuit after his sister Annie Altman filed an amended complaint under Missouri law alleging childhood sexual abuse.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is facing fresh legal trouble, but this time the case has not been filed by an AI company or Elon Musk. Instead, his own sister, Annie Altman, has sued him – again – for alleged sexual abuse. Annie Altman has filed an amended federal lawsuit alleging that Sam Altman sexually abused her more than two decades ago. The new filing comes just days after a US federal judge dismissed her earlier lawsuit from January 2025, finding it outside the limitation of the law.
Annie Altman has now amended her complaint and filed it under Missouri law. The judge has allowed the case to move forward. In her complaint, Annie Altman alleged that her Sam Altman sexually abused and raped her at multiple points between 1997 and 2006 at their family home in Clayton, Missouri. She claimed the abuse began when she was three years old. Sam Altman was 12 then. He is now 40.
In a court filing related to the January 2025 lawsuit, Sam Altman denied the allegations and called the claims false. He also raised concerns about his sister’s mental health and described the lawsuit as extortion.
In 2025, after the lawsuit, Sam Altman shared a post on X with his mother and two brothers. In the statement, the family described it as “incredibly difficult” to care for Annie Altman, who they said refuses conventional treatment for mental health challenges.
“Our family loves Annie and is very concerned about her well-being,” the statement said. “Annie receives monthly financial support, which we expect to continue for the rest of her life. Despite this, Annie continues to demand more money from us.”
Defamation lawsuit filed by Sam Altman
Sam Altman has counter-sued Annie Altman for defamation. In March 2025, he claimed that her allegations were false and were tarnishing his reputation causing emotional pain.
The earlier case filed in January 2025 was dismissed because the alleged abuse took place between 1997 and 2006, and those claims expired in 2008. Under Missouri law, plaintiffs alleging childhood sexual abuse may bring claims within ten years of turning 21 or within three years of discovering that injuries were caused by the alleged abuse, whichever occurs later.
However, filing the case under the Missouri law does not guarantee that the case will proceed to trial. The court must first determine whether the claims meet the legal requirements outlined in the statute.
