WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new feature called “Channel Status.” Right now, only individual users can post stories on the platform. But with this new feature, channel admins are likely to be able to share temporary updates directly within their channels, just like stories. The feature is said to be available for both Android and iOS users and is currently being released to select users in phases.

According to a report by WABetaInfo, the new functionality will enable admins to share photos, videos, text, layouts, and other media formats as a story that automatically will vanish after 24 hours. The feature appears to be designed as a faster and more casual way for channel owners to communicate with followers without publishing permanent posts.

How the new Channel Status functions

If you want to share a Channel Status, first open your channel and then tap on the create status option. Now, you can choose the content you want to publish, whether a photo or a video. In the status editor section, you can customise the media that you’ve added by adding text, stickers or other edits before posting. If you have multiple channels, before the final share, you can also verify which channel the story will be published to or switch to a different channel accordingly. Notably, you can choose only one channel to share a story at a time. And once the its posted, the status becomes visible to all channel followers.

WhatsApp is also expected to add interaction features for followers. Users can react to Channel Status updates with likes or even share them to their own WhatsApp Status. To avoid confusion with personal statuses, WhatsApp labels these updates as “Channel Status” at the top of the screen.

Temporary updates instead of permanent posts

The feature seems aimed at helping admins share quick announcements, event reminders, behind-the-scenes content, or timely information without cluttering the channel feed with permanent updates.

Unlike standard channel posts, Channel Status updates disappear after 24 hours, making them more suitable for short-lived content. The feature also supports only one selected channel at a time while posting.

Although the feature was first spotted in development months ago, WhatsApp has now started rolling it out publicly after reportedly refining its stability and functionality. As of now, the rollout remains limited, but WhatsApp is expected to expand availability to more users over the coming weeks.
