A tribal woman of the Bhamaradiapatana village in Odisha's Kendrapara district sold her newborn to a couple for Rs 2000. The incident took place on Monday, just a day after the baby boy. Gita Murmu, sold the baby to her neighbour Mamta Sahu. Gita, who already has a 12-year-old girl and 10-year-old son, was deserted by her husband. She said that she spent a hefty amount of money to meet her pregnancy expenses. As result of this, the family has no money to take care of their livelihood.
The district committee came into action following the incident, with the chairman of the District Welfare Committee, Sisir Routrai, visiting Gita's house. Routrai said that the financial condition of the family is not good, adding that the mother did not get proper medical care during the birth of her child.
