A British traveller shared how locals in Kerala helped him when he injured himself, challenging the negative stereotypes about India often seen online.

Jack Heaton, who is currently travelling across the country, posted the video on Instagram, reflecting on how his real-life experiences had been vastly different from what social media portrayed.

In the clip, he began by saying, “Honestly guys, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm not seeing the India you see online,” before recounting a recent incident where he fell and hurt his leg. “Like an absolute donut, I fell down and smashed my leg,” he said. What followed, however, surprised him.

He showed footage of two local men rushing to help him, taking him into their home, cleaning and bandaging his wound, without asking for anything in return. The visuals in the video matched his narration, offering a glimpse into the kindness he experienced firsthand.

He went on to share another moment from his early days in India, when he walked into a local restaurant and found himself completely confused by the menu. “I have no idea what anything is,” he said, adding that a woman, who didn’t even work there, stepped in to explain the dishes and suggested what he should order.

Questioning common narratives, he asked, “Where are all these scams? Where’s that smell? Or maybe you only get shown one side online.”

In his caption, Heaton acknowledged that while India isn’t perfect, it is far from the one-dimensional portrayal often seen online. He wrote that his experience has been “99% curious, kind people, always looking out for you,” along with great food and beautiful landscapes. He also emphasised that one should experience a place firsthand before forming an opinion.
