For years, US President Donald Trump has craved the Nobel Peace Prize, constantly boasting about his "beautiful" diplomatic breakthroughs and claiming he deserved the prestigious honour more than anyone else. Now, that long-cherished dream might finally be inching closer. According to news agency Reuters, Donald Trump is expected to be among the nominees as leaders of Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have stated that they nominated him, citing his efforts to resolve conflicts.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received a total of 287 nominations for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The figure, announced on Thursday, includes 208 individuals and 79 organisations. Many new names made it to the list this year.

The new secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, Kristian Berg Harpviken, who assumed the role in January 2025, admitted he was struck by how much the list changes every year. "Since I am new in the job, one of the things that has to some extent surprised me is how much renewal there is from year to year on the list," Harpviken said.

"The Peace Prize is even more important in a period like the one we're living in," he added. "There is as much good work, if not more, than ever."

While these claims cannot be officially verified -- as all nominations remain secret for 50 years -- they fall within the valid timeframe before the January 31 deadline.

WHO ARE THE OTHER NOMINEES?

Although the full list stays confidential, several names have surfaced through public disclosures by the Norwegian lawmaker who nominated them. US Senator Lisa Murkowski and Greenlandic-Danish parliamentarian Aaja Chemnitz were nominated for their long-standing trust-building efforts.

"Together they have worked relentlessly to build trust and to secure a peaceful development of the Arctic region over many years," said Norwegian lawmaker Lars Haltbrekken, who nominated them.

According to reports, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (nominated together with the people of Ukraine), climate activist Greta Thunberg, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese, and Moldovan President Maia Sandu were also nominated.

CONCERN OVER JAILED IRANIAN LAUREATE

The committee also voiced serious concern about the health of Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner currently imprisoned in Iran. Her condition has worsened after she suffered a heart attack earlier this year. "Her sister was able to visit her in prison yesterday and the reports coming out after that are actually quite alarming as to her health condition," Harpviken said.

"We see there is a lot of international pressure now. So we hope that the Iranian authorities do pay attention to that and release her so that she can have proper medical treatment," he added.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, and the award ceremony will take place on December 10 in Oslo.
