Nepal on the boil: Youth storm parliament over social media ban, 1 dead
Thousands of youths are protesting on the streets of Kathmandu and across 10 districts in Nepal against the government's decision to ban unregistered social media platforms. Protesters stormed the federal parliament premises, breaking through police barricades, which led to clashes. Police used tear gas, water cannons, and fired upon the crowd to disperse demonstrators, resulting in one death and injuries to over 80 people. The youth state the ban is an attack on their livelihood and a way to curb criticism, with some saying their "voices are being suppressed." The government maintains the action was taken because the platforms failed to register as required. In response to the escalating situation, a curfew has been imposed in parts of Kathmandu, an emergency meeting has been called by the government, and an internet shutdown is in effect.
