Next-generation Kia Sonet spotted testing in India ahead of 2027 debut
Kia has commenced testing of the next-generation Sonet in India, previewing major updates to design, features and platform, with the compact SUV expected to debut in the Indian market in 2027.

Kia has begun road testing the second-generation Sonet in India, giving us the first glimpse of the brand’s refreshed compact SUV. The heavily camouflaged prototype hints at a substantial overhaul in terms of design, cabin technology and underpinnings. The new Sonet is expected to arrive in India sometime in 2027.
Despite the camouflage, a few styling details are visible on the test mule. The front-end appears to adopt cues from the latest-generation Seltos, including a wider grille design stretching across the nose. The headlamp setup, meanwhile, seems slimmer and more upright, with eyebrow-like LED daytime running lamps placed above them. Freshly designed alloy wheels and a cleaner bumper layout also suggest a more mature design language for the next-gen SUV.
The profile hints at slightly revised proportions as well, which could translate into improved cabin room. A sunroof is visible on the prototype, although it remains unclear whether Kia will continue with a single-pane setup or introduce a panoramic unit similar to the Syros.
One of the biggest changes underneath will be the shift to Kia’s newer K1 architecture, replacing the existing K2 platform. The same platform already underpins newer Hyundai-Kia models such as the Syros and updated Venue. Besides enabling better packaging and improved rear-seat space, the K1 platform is also expected to bring structural enhancements aimed at achieving a stronger Bharat NCAP safety performance.
Inside, the new Sonet is likely to receive a significantly upgraded cabin with a cleaner dashboard layout and more premium materials. Kia is also expected to equip the SUV with larger 12.3-inch displays for both the infotainment system and the digital instrument cluster. Connected car features, OTA updates and improved in-car tech are also likely to be part of the package.
ADAS technology could see a major upgrade too. While the current Sonet offers Level 1 driver assistance functions, the new-generation model may move to a more advanced Level 2 ADAS suite, depending on the final feature strategy.
On the powertrain front, Kia is expected to retain the existing engine lineup initially. This should include the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit and the 1.5-litre diesel engine, paired with familiar manual and automatic gearbox options.
In addition, Kia is reportedly developing a strong-hybrid version of the Sonet based on its 1.2-litre petrol engine. The hybrid variant is expected to arrive later in the model’s lifecycle, potentially around 2028, and could make the Sonet one of the first strong-hybrid offerings in the sub-4m SUV space.
Once launched, the next-generation Sonet will continue to compete against rivals such as the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza and Mahindra XUV 3XO in the highly competitive compact SUV segment.
