Yamuna breaches danger mark in Delhi, evacuations on in low-lying areas

Continuous rainfall in Delhi-NCR has caused the Yamuna river to cross the danger mark, prompting the government to issue a flood alert. Evacuations are underway in low-lying areas, with families being moved to relief camps. Schools in Noida and Ghaziabad have been closed as a precautionary measure. This situation evokes memories of the July 2023 floods, when the Yamuna reached its highest-ever recorded level of 208.66 meters. Currently, the river's water level is over 206.36 meters, with the crisis intensified by massive water discharges from the Hathni Kund Barrage. In the last 24 hours, more than 1.7 lakh cusecs of water were released.

The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
