India Today Conclave South 2017: Merit in politics compromised by caste, loyalty to leaders, says RV Deshpande

Speaking at the India Today Conclave South 2017 during a session titled 'Why invest in the South: The case for change', Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development RV Deshpande said, "merit in politics compromised by caste, loyalty to leaders". He was joined by Thiru MC Sampath, Minister for Industries, Tamil Nadu, KT Rama Rao, Telangana Minister for Information and Technology, Industries and Commerce and MM Pallam Raju, former Union Minister.

Telangana's KT Rama Rao said his government searched for countries that have adopted best practices in ease of business, and zeroed in on Singapore, which ranks first in ease of business index globally.

RV Deshpande said increased competition between states has led to greater transparency, adding that in post-liberalisation era it is difficult for red-tapism to go undetected.

When RV Deshpande was asked how ministries are allocated in a government, he said, "merit in politics is getting compromised by caste and loyalty to party leaders." He also said that in his long political career he has also seen people from the grassroots going on to become highly successful ministers.
