Covid-19: Uttar Pradesh extends weekend lockdown to cover Mondays too

Uttar Pradesh on Thursday extended lockdown timing. Now, there will be a lockdown on Mondays as well in the wake of the rising Covid cases in the state. "The weekend closure will now be applicable from Friday 8 pm till Tuesday 7 am," Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Navneet Sehgal said. Presently, the weekend lockdown in the state begins at Friday 8 pm and ends at Monday 7 am.

The decision was taken at a review meeting chaired by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and will be implemented across the state starting this Friday. During this period, all essential services will be allowed and vaccination drive will continue, the official said, but refused to term it a "lockdown", preferring "closure" instead.

On April 22, India’s tally of fresh Covid-19 cases breached the three lakh mark for the first time and since then the country has been reporting a rise of more than three lakh coronavirus cases daily. The worst affected states are Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka and Kerala.
