India logs 1,79,723 new covid cases, 146 deaths in last 24 hours

Continuing the surge in Covid infections, India registered 1,79,723 new cases in the last 24 hours, 12.6% higher than the figure reported on Sunday. This has brought the total caseload to 3,57,07,727. As many as 146 deaths were reported in the country over the last 24 hours, increasing the total reported death count to 4,83,936.
The top five states that registered maximum cases are Maharashtra with 44,388 cases, followed by West Bengal with 24,287 cases, Delhi with 22,751 cases, Tamil Nadu with 12,895 cases and Karnataka with 12,000 cases.

TVK leader C Joseph Vijay on Sunday took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu amid a sea of supporters, his friends and family, and several political leaders. Eight other TVK leaders were sworn in besides him, as ministers in the new government. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also attended the ceremony. The TVK managed to secure the Governor's nod to form the government after the Congress, the CPI, the CPI(M), the VCK, and IUML extended their support to the Vijay-led party for a colaition government.
