After lockdown announcement, migrant workers in Delhi rush back home | In Photos

Thousands of migrant workers gathered at Anand Vihar Bus Terminal in Delhi to return to their hometowns, soon after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced a week-long lockdown on Monday.

Kejriwal had urged migrant workers not to leave Delhi as the lockdown is a shorter one and also assured them that the government will take care of their needs during this period.

Arvind Kejriwal on Monday announced a six-day lockdown from 10 pm on April 19 till 5 am on April 26 amid the rising Covid-19 cases in Delhi.

Covid-19 protocol went for a toss as people rushed towards buses with their families. Even police could not manage the crowd.

The migrants said they don't want a repeat of last year's crisis.

Policemen deployed in the area were trying to counsel the migrant workers to stay back. However, migrants feared that the lockdown could be extended as the situation of Covid-19 was deteriorating day by day.

In the last 24 hours, Delhi recorded 23,686 new Covid-19 cases and the positivity rate is at 26.12 per cent.

During the nationwide lockdown last year, a large number of migrant workers from Bihar, UP and other states living in Delhi had moved to their home states, through whatever means available and often on foot.
