Several countries step up to help India fight against Covid-19

Several countries including Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom have extended a helping hand towards India in the country's fight against the second wave of the novel coronavirus pandemic. Standing true to its ‘historical’ partnership with India, Russia on Wednesday sent two planeloads of humanitarian aid to New Delhi to help fight the Covid crisis. Even as the planes were en route, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke over the phone to discuss the evolving Covid-19 situation in India. The country on Thursday recorded over 3.79 lakh fresh Covid-19 cases and over 3,600 deaths in 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the US has dispatched its first batch of Covid-19 relief materials to India, including oxygen cylinders and regulators, Rapid Diagnostic Test kits and N95 masks. The White House has said the US would be sending supplies worth more than $100 million to India and "meet the urgent health needs of the Indian people". In a statement on Wednesday, US Agency for International Development (USAID) said, "The United States deployed the first of several emergency Covid-19 relief shipments to India. Arriving in New Delhi from Travis Air Force Base on the world's largest military aircraft, the shipment includes 440 oxygen cylinders and regulators."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
