CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation 2026: Steps after applying, fees, rules explained

With over 4 lakh students requesting access to nearly 11 lakh answer scripts, CBSE has opened the Class 12 re-evaluation process today amid the ongoing controversy surrounding its On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.

The process began on May 19 for applications of scanned copies, while today's the last day to apply for re-evaluation.

With many students having already applied for re-evaluation after the Class 12 results, an important question remains: what exactly happens after the application is submitted?

THE COMPLETE TIMELINE

The post-result process for Class 12 students was divided into multiple stages:

StageDates
Application for scanned copy of answer bookMay 19 to May 22, 2026
Access to scanned answer sheetsAfter successful application
Verification of marks and re-evaluation applicationsMay 26 to May 29, 2026
Processing of requests by CBSEAfter closure of application window
Declaration of revised result/statusThrough candidate login

Students could only move to the verification or re-evaluation stage if they had first obtained the scanned copy of their evaluated answer book.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER YOU APPLY?

Once a student submits a re-evaluation request, CBSE does not recheck the entire answer sheet.

Instead, the board re-evaluates only the specific questions selected by the student during the application process.

Before applying, students are expected to compare their scanned answer sheets with the official marking scheme and identify questions where they believe marks may not have been awarded correctly.

The board then examines only those particular questions and reviews the marking.

CAN YOUR MARKS GO UP OR DOWN?

Yes.

After re-evaluation, marks can:

  • Increase

  • Decrease

  • Remain unchanged

The revised marks, if any, become final and are reflected in the student's record.

CBSE has clearly stated that its decision after re-evaluation is final and binding.

DOES CBSE ISSUE A NEW MARK SHEET AFTER RE-EVALUATION?

Yes. If a student's marks change after re-evaluation, CBSE updates the revised marks in its records and issues a fresh marks statement reflecting the corrected score.

A new marksheet will be provided to the student temporarily on DigiLokcer based on the increased marks before the physical copy is given to the students via schools.

The earlier mark sheet becomes invalid for that subject. Students can access the updated result through official CBSE channels, and schools are informed of the revised marks wherever applicable.

WHAT ABOUT THE FEES?

For the 2026 post-result process, CBSE revised the fee structure:

  • Scanned copy of the evaluated answer book: Rs 100 per subject

  • Verification of issues observed: Rs 100 per subject

  • Re-evaluation: Rs 25 per question

One major change introduced this year is the refund provision.

If a student's marks increase after re-evaluation, the fee paid for re-evaluation of that question will be refunded by CBSE.

WHY WAS THE SYSTEM CHANGED?

The revised process was introduced alongside CBSE's OSM evaluation system, under which answer scripts are scanned and evaluated digitally.

The board says the new re-evaluation structure gives students greater transparency because they can first see exactly how their answers were marked before deciding whether a review is necessary.

The move also followed concerns raised after the 2026 results. Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar acknowledged that errors were found in a small number of answer sheets during the evaluation process and required correction. However, he clarified that artificial intelligence was not used in the marking process.

The OSM system has brought various issues with it where students' answer sheets were blurred, faded and even some pages missing from the copy. In a few cases, the answer sheet got mixed up.

The board acknowledged the mistakes regarding OSM and provided measures for it.

CBSE believes the new model reduces unnecessary review requests and ensures that re-evaluation applications are based on specific observations rather than assumptions.

For students who have already applied, the next step is simply to wait for CBSE to complete the review of the selected questions and update the final status in their login accounts.
