CBSE declares Class 12 results. What is the grading system and passing criteria?
CBSE Class 12 Results 2026 have been declared by the board authorities today. Before the results are declared, students can understand the CBSE grading system, passing marks, subject-wise criteria and how final grades are calculated.

With the CBSE 12th Result 2026 declared today, many students are now checking not only the result date but also the passing criteria and grading system followed by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The board uses a grade-based evaluation process for Class 12 students, where both theory and practical marks are considered while preparing the final result.
To clear the board exams, students must secure the minimum required marks in each subject separately.
Understanding the CBSE grading system before the result announcement can help students better read their scorecards and calculate overall performance.
WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM PASSING MARKS?
According to CBSE guidelines, students must score at least 33 per cent marks in each subject to pass the Class 12 board examinations.
For subjects that include both theory and practical exams, students need to separately pass both sections. This means candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks in theory as well as practical or internal assessment components.
If a student fails to achieve the required marks in one or two subjects, they may be allowed to appear for compartment examinations later.
HOW DOES THE CBSE GRADING SYSTEM WORK?
CBSE follows a grade-based marking system instead of only showing raw marks. Grades are awarded based on a student’s performance compared with other candidates appearing for the examination.
The grading structure generally includes grades from A1 to E, with A1 being the highest grade.
Here is the commonly used CBSE grading pattern:
A1: Top-performing students
A2
B1
B2
C1
C2
D
E: Indicates need for improvement
The final marksheet usually includes subject-wise marks, grades and qualifying status.
THEORY AND PRACTICAL MARKS BOTH MATTER
For many Class 12 subjects, especially Science and vocational papers, practical exams form an important part of the total score. CBSE combines theory marks and practical/internal assessment marks while preparing final results.
Students are advised to carefully check both sections once the results are declared to avoid confusion regarding pass status.
