The town of Irinjalakuda itself is well-known for its religious and cultural sites, lively celebrations, and educational establishments that draw students from all over Kerala. Political History and Representation

The election history of Irinjalakuda has been competitive and dynamic. Both the United Democratic Front (UDF), headed by the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), primarily through the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], have represented the constituency over the years. Adv. Thomas Unniyadan from Kerala Congress(M) won the election in 2011. The seat was won by Adv. R. Bindu (CPI(M), LDF) in 2016 and 2021.

Kerala Assembly Election Results for 2021

Current Minister Adv. R. Bindu of the CPI(M), who ran for the Left Democratic Front (LDF), won a resounding victory in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election in Irinjalakuda. She received 62493 votes, or almost 40.27 percent vote share. Adv. Thomas Unniyadan from Kerala Congress(Jacob) came next with 56,544 and 36.44 percent vote share.  Dr Jacob Thomas from BJP(NDA) received 34,329 votes or 22.12 percent vote share.

Adv. R. Bindu's victory margin of around 21,000 votes demonstrated the LDF's strong mandate, despite the UDF and NDA (via the BJP) capturing a sizable portion of the vote in a multi-party contest.

Social and Economic Features.

Irinjalakuda is a thriving town that is home to a wide range of professions, including wholesale, retail, and service enterprises. A large number of educational establishments and related services draw students from nearby areas and offer job possibilities. Traditional agricultural practices, including growing vegetables, paddy, coconuts, and bananas, are still practised by outlying rural panchayats. Similar to many other areas of Kerala, household incomes and local consumption are greatly influenced by remittances from family members who work outside the state, particularly in Gulf nations.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

The LDF has solidified support through robust grassroots networks, welfare measures, and community engagement, especially through the CPI(M) and affiliated parties. Professional, middle-class, and traditional Congress-aligned elements continue to support the UDF, which is led by the Indian National Congress, as the primary opponent. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), particularly the BJP, has significantly increased its share of the vote, which is indicative of both single-issue appeal among some voter groups and larger national tendencies.
