Thrissur Assembly Election 2026
Thrissur Assembly Constituency

Thrissur Assembly Constituency is situated in Thrissur district of Kerala. Thrissur is a well-known seat for the legislative assembly. Constituency No. 67, which is part of the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections, is one of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Thrissur city and its constituency, dubbed the "Cultural Capital of Kerala," offer a wealth of historical legacy, a thriving social scene, and strong political engagement, making it a prominent and competitive seat in state politics.

Geography and Administrative Profile

The urban, suburban, and peri-urban regions that surround Thrissur city, the district's seat, make up the Thrissur constituency.  It includes Wards No.1 to 11, 14 to 22, 32 to 39 & 43 to 50 of Thrissur (M. Corporation) in Thrissur Taluk.

Voter participation and the electorate

There were roughly 182,823 registered voters in the 2021 Assembly election, with nearly equal numbers of men and women. Despite the difficulties of urban voter mobilisation, Thrissur's voter turnout has consistently remained above 70%. The voter turnout for the 2021 election was 70.69 percent.

History of Politics and Representation

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] and its allies, and the United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress (INC), have alternated power in Thrissur throughout its combative political history. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has also participated in the constituency; over successive elections, the BJP's vote share has steadily grown. Thrissur has been represented by well-known politicians and civic leaders from both major fronts over the years, demonstrating the city's standing as a politically active seat.

Kerala Assembly Election Results for 2021

With 44,263 votes, or 34.25 percent of the total votes cast, P. Balachandran of the Communist Party of India (CPI) won this hotly contested Assembly election. Padmaja Venugopal of the Indian National Congress (INC) came in just behind him with 43,317 votes, or 33.52 percent, indicating a very narrow difference between the two main fronts. With 40,457 votes, or 31.30% of the total, the current union minister of state Suresh Gopi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished in a solid third place, highlighting the BJP's expanding support in the area and transforming the race into a true three-cornered campaign.

Social and Economic Features

A wide range of retail marketplaces, wholesale companies, banks, hotel services, and trade associations supports the urban economy. Thrissur's well-known celebrations, such as Thrissur Pooram, draw tourists and boost related businesses. Farming, horticulture, and related activities are carried out in the surrounding peri-urban wards, supporting local livelihoods. As is typical in Kerala's urban and semi-urban constituencies, remittances from family members who are employed abroad, especially in Gulf nations, also considerably increase household incomes.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Through public sector connections, welfare policy narratives, and community participation, the CPI and CPI(M) have gained support from workers and urban areas. Under the leadership of the INC, the UDF continues to be a significant opponent with solid organisational ties to corporate, professional, and middle-class groups. The BJP has steadily increased its share of the vote, especially among younger voters, those who prioritise national problems, and younger urban electorates.
