Election Result Live Assam: NDA sweeps Assam

The counting of votes for the 2026 Assembly election in Assam has concluded, delivering a decisive verdict in favour of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Voters had sealed the fate of 722 candidates across 126 constituencies on April 9. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has led the Bharatiya Janata Party to a third consecutive term, with the NDA securing 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.

Within the alliance, the BJP emerged as the dominant force with 82 seats, while its allies — Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front — secured 10 seats each.

The opposition trailed significantly, with the Congress-led bloc managing 21 seats. The Indian National Congress won 19 seats, while Raijor Dal secured 2. Other parties and independents accounted for 3 seats.

Assembly Election 2026: Jitendra Singh Alwar quits Congress after poll setback

Jitendra Singh Alwar has resigned as the Congress General Secretary in charge of Assam, taking responsibility for the party’s disappointing performance in the state assembly elections. In a letter addressed to Mallikarjun Kharge, Singh said: “I write to tender my resignation as General Secretary In-Charge of Assam with immediate effect.”

He acknowledged the outcome of the polls, stating: “The recent election results have been deeply disappointing, and I take full responsibility for my role in the outcome. Despite our best efforts, we were unable to meet the expectations of the people of Assam whom we sought to serve.”
Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the role and thanked party workers and the people of Assam for their support. “I am grateful for the opportunity to have served and for the trust placed in me during my tenure. I thank the people of Assam, as well as the Congress workers and leaders of Assam, for the love and respect they have shown me,” he said.

Vote Counting in Assam: NDA crosses 100-seat mark in Assam, BJP alone ahead in 82 constituencies

The BJP and its allies have maintained its impressive lead in Assam. As of 5.15 pm, the saffron party has emerged victorious in 28 seats across the state and continues to lead in 54 others, adding up to a total of 82 constituencies. Meanwhile, its NDA allies BOPF and AGP have won four and two seats respectively. Besides this, the BOPF is ahead in six seats and the AGP is ahead in 7. Hence, the NDA has won 36 seats so far, and is leading on 65 others – totalling 101 seats.

Assam Election Result: Most Assam ministers leading in their seats

Most ministers of the BJP-led Assam government are leading in their respective constituencies, according to trends published by the Election Commission as counting of votes progressed on Monday. The list below includes names of leaders belonging to the BJP and its allies: 

  • Chandra Mohan Patowary (BJP) - Tihu
  • Atul Bora (AGP) - Bokakhat
  • Keshab Mahanta (AGP) - Kaliabor
  • Ranjeet Kumar Dass (BJP) - Bhowanipur-Sorbhog
  • Ajanta Neog (BJP) - Golaghat
  • Pijush Hazarika (BJP) - Jagiroad
  • Ashok Singhal (BJP) - Dhekiajuli
  • Ranoj Pegu (BJP) - Dhemaji

The BJP has managed to maintain the aggressive lead it built right from the very early stage of counting. While the NDA is ahead in 97 seats in the northeastern state, the BJP alone is leading in 79 constituencies. The majority mark for government formation in Assam stands at 64.

Assam Election Result: BJP MP praises PM Modi as BJP gains massive lead in Assam

BJP MP Baijayant Jay Panda says that the prevailing counting day trends indicate that a landslide victory is inevitable for his party in Assam. He thanked the people of the state for reposting their faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The current trend indicates a landslide victory in Assam. I would like to thank the people of Assam. The support they have shown to our most popular leader, respected Modi ji, and to the double-engine government here is very important for Assam, for the next generation of Assam, and for the country," Panda said in a byte shared on X by ANI.

The BJP is leading in 79 seats, with the wider NDA ahead in 98 seats overall. With 126 Assembly seats, the majority mark to form a government in Assam stands at 64.

Congress MLA and Leader of the Opposition in Assam Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, is trailing in his constituency, Nazira, by 12,166 votes as of 12 pm Monday. The seat, considered an impregnable bastion for the leader, has been represented by him since 2011. Moreover, his father, former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and mother, Hemoprava Saikia, were also MLAs of the constituency.

BJP's Mayur Borgohain is leading in Nazira, per official trends released by the Election Commission.

Vote Counting in Assam: Major opposition leaders behind in early trends

Nearly every prominent opposition figure in Assam, including Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, Debabrata Saikia; Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jagadish Bhuyan, and Rajen Gohain, were behind in their respective seats, as per Election Commission figures released on Monday.

Congress leader Debabrata Saikia was trailing by 4,967 votes in the Nazira constituency of Sivasagar district. BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain had obtained 11,607 votes after the second round, while Saikia had secured 6,640 votes.

Raijor Dal chief and sitting MLA Akhil Gogoi, who is contesting to retain the Sibsagar constituency, was lagging after the first round. He received 3,262 votes, whereas BJP’s Kushal Dowari polled 5,171 votes.

NDA partner AGP’s Prodip Hazarika garnered 443 votes in Sibsagar after the first round, according to Election Commission data.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi was also trailing his nearest rival from the BJP.

While Gogoi bagged 11,845 votes in three rounds, BJP's Chakradhar Gogoi received 14,360.

Assam Election Results: BJP's impressive lead spans urban, semi-urban and rural areas

The BJP-led NDA is leading in Assembly seats spread across urban, semi-urban and rural areas in Assam. 

The saffron party is leading in 13 out of 15 Assembly constituencies in urban areas. Similarly, it is ahead in 18 out of 22 seats in semi-urban regions. In rural areas, the BJP is leading in 68 out of 89 Assembly seats.

These are, however, early trends and are likely to change as the counting progresses.
