Mamata Banerjee has flagged delays in the counting process across West Bengal, saying only a fraction of votes have been tallied so far. She also pointed to reports of pauses at some centres and sought clarity on the process, even as early trends show the BJP in the lead. Despite this, she asserted that the TMC would emerge victorious by the end of the day.

Subrata Maitra, the sitting BJP MLA from Baharampur, is seeking re-election after scripting a historic win for the party in 2021. Maitra had defeated the Trinamool Congress candidate by over 26,000 votes, marking the first time the BJP won this seat, and is now in a tight three-cornered contest to retain his foothold.

Once dubbed Murshidabad’s “Robin Hood”, the five-time MP and former Union minister is now battling to stay relevant, contesting the Assembly seat within his former Lok Sabha stronghold.

Vote counting in Baharampur started at 8 am, with all arrangements in place at designated centres. Postal ballots will be counted first, followed by EVM rounds, and initial trends are expected soon after proceedings get underway.
