Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi departed from his residence on Sunday for Chennai to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Tamil Nadu chief minister-designate Vijay.

Vijay is set to take oath as the new chief minister of Tamil Nadu later in the day amid significant political attention surrounding the transition of power in the state.
 

DMK mouthpiece Murasoli on Saturday sharply criticised Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party following their decision to leave the DMK-led alliance and join hands with TVK in Tamil Nadu.

In an editorial, the DMK publication questioned Rahul Gandhi’s appreciation of the long-standing political relationship between the two parties. It highlighted that MK Stalin was the first major regional leader to publicly project Rahul Gandhi as the opposition’s prime ministerial face in 2018.

The editorial accused the Congress leadership of failing to acknowledge DMK’s support over the years and criticised what it described as a “lack of gratitude” after the alliance split.
 

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Saturday congratulated Vijay over his projected move to form the government in Tamil Nadu, calling it a result of strong alliance coordination and grassroots political efforts.

Speaking to ANI, Annadurai said Vijay’s emergence as chief minister was made possible with the backing of DMK allies and support from party workers across the state.

He also referred to earlier remarks by MK Stalin, saying the DMK leadership had stressed the need to avoid any constitutional uncertainty in the state.

"Congratulations to the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Vijay. He is able to become the Chief Minister with the help of the allies of the DMK, and our leader MK Stalin has also earlier pointed out that he does not want a constitutional crisis, "Annadurai told ANI. 

Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Saturday congratulated Vijay, the chief minister-designate of TVK, saying the people of Tamil Nadu are expecting a new era of governance and social progress.

In a message posted on X, Tagore said the state stands at a turning point where citizens are looking for change rooted in social justice, equality, development, and compassionate leadership.

He expressed confidence that Vijay’s leadership would deliver a transparent and people-focused administration, adding that Tamil Nadu’s residents are hoping for inclusive growth and better governance.

Tagore also wished Vijay success in his political journey and said the new leadership carries the aspirations of millions across the state.

Former DMK Minister Periyakaruppan, who lost to TVK candidate Seenivasa Sethupathi by one vote, has approached the Madras High Court. An interim relief has been sought to restrain Sethupathi from taking oath. Madras High Court to hold a special Sunday sitting to hear DMK leader KR Periakaruppan’s plea after he lost to the TVK candidate by just one vote. He has sought an interim injunction restraining the TVK MLA from participating in any legislative process pending disposal of the writ petition.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will attend the oath ceremony of Vijay tomorrow. Congress, which won five seats in the recently-concluded Tamil Nadu elections, backed Vijay's TVK after the latter fell short of majority.

The Governor of Tamil Nadu has appointed TVK chief Vijay as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. 

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar has directed the Chief Minister-designate Vijay to seek the vote of confidence of the state Assembly on or before May 13, 2026.

Sources said TVK chief Vijay will take oath as Chief Minister at 10 am on Sunday after seeking a change in the swearing-in time based on his astrologer’s advice. Sources added that this was one of the reasons why his meeting lasted for nearly two hours.

Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), will take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 10 am on Sunday at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium.

TVK chief Vijay has left the Lok Bhavan after meeting the Tamil Nadu Governor. He is now the CM-designate and will be sworn in as the CM tomorrow.

With the Tamil Nadu Governor accepting the signatures of 120 MLAs, Vijay’s claim to form the government has been approved. Until he is sworn in as Chief Minister, he will be regarded as the Chief Minister-designate.

Actor-turned-politician Vijay on Saturday received the Governor's clearance to form the government in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), secured the support required to cross the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. "The smaller allies have decided to support Vijay-led TVK after speaking to us. However, the Congress betrayed us. The party did not even have the basic decency to consult with us before leaving the alliance," said A Saravanan of the DMK.
