Asansol Dakshin Assembly Election 2026
Asansol Dakshin Assembly Constituency

Asansol Dakshin, a general category Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district, is one of the seven segments under the Asansol Lok Sabha seat. The constituency was carved out in 2008 following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission, which split the erstwhile Asansol Assembly seat into Asansol Dakshin and Asansol Uttar. It comprises 22 wards of the Asansol Municipal Corporation and five gram panchayats from the Raniganj community development block. With only 5.55 per cent rural voters, Asansol Dakshin is a predominantly urban constituency.

Since its inception, the seat has witnessed three Assembly elections. The Trinamool Congress dominated the first two contests, with Tapas Banerjee securing victories in both 2011 and 2016. In 2011, he defeated CPI(M)’s Alok Kumar Mukherjee by 28,541 votes, and in 2016, he overcame CPI(M)’s Hemant Prabhakar by a reduced margin of 14,283 votes. However, in 2021, the Trinamool Congress shifted Banerjee to the Raniganj seat and fielded Bengali film actress Saayoni Ghosh in Asansol Dakshin. The decision backfired, as BJP’s Agnimitra Paul, a fashion designer, won the seat by 4,487 votes, marking the party’s first victory here.

The seat has seen frequent changes in candidates across parties, with neither the CPI(M) nor the BJP repeating their nominees in successive elections. The Trinamool Congress’s gamble of moving Tapas Banerjee to Raniganj paid off for him personally, but cost the party dearly in Asansol Dakshin.

The BJP’s win in 2021 was not an isolated event. The party had been steadily building its base in the region, leading in the Asansol Dakshin Assembly segment by 21,062 votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. This lead widened to 53,820 votes in 2019, before narrowing to 12,157 votes in 2024. The trend reflects the BJP’s growing appeal, especially among the Hindi-speaking population, many of whom trace their roots to Bihar and Jharkhand. Local estimates suggest that Hindi-speaking voters, largely migrants from neighbouring states, could make up around 35 to 40 per cent of the electorate.

Asansol Dakshin had 274,245 registered voters in the 2021 Assembly elections, up from 258,223 in 2019 and 247,366 in 2016. Muslims constitute approximately 12.30 per cent of the voters, while Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes account for 20.56 per cent and 6.50 per cent respectively. Voter turnout has remained steady, with 74.01 per cent in 2021, 75.48 per cent in 2019, and 75.08 per cent in 2016.

Asansol city, which forms the core of the constituency, is the second-largest urban agglomeration in West Bengal after Kolkata. It is situated in the western part of the state, close to the Jharkhand border. The terrain is undulating, with patches of forest and coal-rich land. The Damodar River flows nearby, though its role in irrigation is limited due to industrial use and pollution. The region is part of the Raniganj coalfield, one of the oldest coal mining belts in India. Mining, along with the steel and rail industries, forms the backbone of the local economy. The presence of the Indian Iron and Steel Company (IISCO) and the Eastern Railway’s workshops has historically provided employment, though mechanisation and downsizing have led to job losses in recent decades.

Asansol is located approximately 210 km from Kolkata, the state capital. Nearby towns in West Bengal include Durgapur (50 km), Raniganj (15 km), Jamuria (10 km), and Bardhaman (100 km). On the Jharkhand side, the border is just 20 km away, with towns like Dhanbad (45 km), Chirkunda (25 km), and Jharia (50 km) easily accessible.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, Asansol Dakshin is set for another closely fought contest. The BJP, buoyed by its recent successes and support among migrant voters, will look to retain the seat. The Trinamool Congress, aware of the missteps in 2021, is likely to recalibrate its strategy. With no party enjoying a clear edge, the constituency promises a high-voltage electoral battle where every vote will count.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
