Krishnanagar Dakshin Assembly Election 2026
Krishnanagar Dakshin Assembly Constituency

Krishnanagar Dakshin, a general category Assembly constituency in West Bengal’s Nadia district, is one of the seven segments under the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat. The constituency traces its origins to 1951, when it was first established as the undivided Krishnanagar Assembly seat. In 1967, it was split into Krishnanagar East and Krishnanagar West, both of which continued until 2006. Following the recommendations of the Delimitation Commission in 2008, these two seats were dissolved and replaced by Krishnanagar Uttar and Krishnanagar Dakshin, which came into existence in 2011. The present-day Krishnanagar Dakshin includes five gram panchayats from the Krishnanagar I community development block and the entire Krishnanagar II block.

Since its inception in 2011, Krishnanagar Dakshin has voted thrice, and each time the Trinamool Congress has emerged victorious with Ujjal Biswas as its candidate. Biswas, who currently serves as a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government, defeated CPI(M) candidates in the first two elections in 2011 and 2016 by margins of 11,028 and 12,814 votes, respectively. The BJP, which had been a distant third, made significant inroads in 2021, with Mahadev Sarkar finishing second and narrowing Biswas’s victory margin to 9,305 votes.

The BJP’s growing influence in the constituency was first evident in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when it led over the Trinamool Congress by 6,724 votes in the Krishnanagar Dakshin segment. This lead widened to 8,938 votes in the 2024 parliamentary polls, signalling a shift in voter preference and giving the Trinamool Congress reason for concern.

Krishnanagar Dakshin had 225,118 registered voters in 2021, up from 216,429 in 2019 and 201,791 in 2016. The constituency has a sizeable Muslim electorate, comprising 27.50 per cent of voters, while Scheduled Castes account for 24.22 per cent. It is predominantly rural, with only 10.91 per cent of voters residing in urban areas. Voter turnout has consistently remained high, with 88.39 per cent in 2011, 87.80 per cent in 2016, 85.49 per cent in 2019 and 86.93 per cent in 2021.

Krishnanagar, the district headquarters of Nadia, is steeped in history. The town gained prominence in the 18th century under Raja Krishna Chandra Roy, after whom it is named. The Krishnanagar Rajbari, though now in ruins, remains a symbol of the region’s cultural heritage. The area is known for its clay artisans of Ghurni, whose figurines are renowned across Bengal and beyond.

Geographically, Krishnanagar Dakshin lies in the fertile alluvial plains of the Bhagirathi basin. The Jalangi River flows through the region, supporting agriculture and shaping the terrain. The land is flat and highly cultivable, with paddy, jute and vegetables being the primary crops. The economy is largely agrarian, supplemented by small-scale trading and service-based occupations. Industrial activity is minimal, and many residents seek employment in nearby towns or migrate to Kolkata and other cities.

Infrastructure in the constituency is modest but improving. Krishnanagar is well-connected by rail and road, with the Krishnanagar City Junction serving as a key railway station on the Sealdah–Lalgola line.

Krishnanagar is located about 105 km north of Kolkata, the state capital. It is roughly 25 km from Shantipur, 35 km from Ranaghat, and 40 km from Kalyani. The Bangladesh border lies to the east, with the border town of Meherpur just across the international boundary. The constituency also shares proximity with the districts of Murshidabad to the north and North 24 Parganas to the south.

As the 2026 Assembly elections approach, the Trinamool Congress cannot take its fourth consecutive victory for granted. The BJP’s consistent leads in the Lok Sabha polls have demonstrated that winning Krishnanagar Dakshin is no longer a distant possibility. The party will be banking on a revival of the CPI(M)-Congress alliance, which could erode Trinamool’s vote share and open the door for a BJP win. In a constituency where margins have narrowed and voter preferences are shifting, Krishnanagar Dakshin is poised for a keenly contested electoral battle.

Bengal Post-Poll Updates: TMC appoints Kolkata Mayor as Chief Whip, Deputy LoPs also named

West Bengal witnessed a major political development on Saturday as Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony in Kolkata. The event was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union ministers, and Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states. During the ceremony, PM Modi was seen touching the feet of 98-year-old BJP veteran Makhanlal Sarkar, drawing attention from leaders present at the venue. In a key administrative move, retired IAS officer and former Election Commission special observer for SIR, Subrata Gupta, has been appointed as advisor to the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called upon the Left and other opposition parties to unite and form a "joint platform" against the BJP. In a parallel development, the Trinamool Congress appointed senior leader and 10-time MLA Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly.

Video: Yogi Adityanath gifts saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari at his oath-taking

Yogi Adityanath on Saturday presented a saffron gamcha to Suvendu Adhikari, shortly after the latter took oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal. The crowd also erupted into a loud cheer as the scene unfolded at the swearing-in ceremony in Kolkata. This was at least the second such instance in recent weeks when the duo's bonhomie was witnessed publicly. Earlier, during the election campaign in the state, a powerful scene was witnessed when Adhikari bowed down at the feet of the UP Chief Minister as a mark of respect.
