At least 22 people, most of them children, drowned after a houseboat carrying nearly 40 passengers capsized on Sunday evening in the Tanur area of Kerala's Malappuram. The rescue operations, with the help of fire services personnel and voluntary workers, are underway.
According to the police, the accident took place around 7 pm. The cause of the incident remains unknown. PM Modi has announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased.
