Telangana witnessed its first same-sex wedding on December 18 as a gay couple made their relationship official by exchanging rings.

Amid much fanfare, Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang tied the knot at a ceremony attended by their family and close friends

The private ceremony was held at a resort located on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Saturday.

The ceremony saw Bengali and Punjabi wedding rituals as Supriyo is from Kolkata, and Abhay is from Delhi.

The couple has been into an eight-year-long relationship and has now officially become ‘husband and husband’.

The ceremony was officiated by a transvestite person, Sophia David, from Hyderabad.

While India struck down a colonial-era law that criminalized gay sex in 2018, there is no law allowing same-sex marriage.

“Our parents weren’t initially the most supportive. However, they also didn’t disapprove of it either. They decided to give us and themselves a good amount of time to introspect and come to a better conclusion. Now, we have their acceptance,” Chakraorty said.

The venue was decorated beautifully to celebrate the same-sex union.
