Tamil Nadu cinemas go on strike against 30 per cent tax in addition to GST

Tamil Nadu Cinema Owner's Association has upped the ante after the state's decision to levy extra municipality tax over and above the GST. Cinemas across Tamil Nadu are shut in protest against the state government's move.

After the GST rollout, the owners have to pay 28 per cent GST. Along with the GST, they have to pay existing 30 per cent state entertainment tax due to which moviegoers will now have to bear 58 per cent totally which will increase the rate of the tickets.

Tamil film industry workers want the government to waive off the entertainment tax and only levy GST but the Tamil Nadu government seems to be in no mood to relent.
