Haryana Chief Manohar Lal Khattar became a centre of major controversy on Saturday after he said, "Earlier bahus used to come from Bihar but now we will bring girls from Kashmir."
Talking about the progress Haryana has made in restoring the sex ratio balance in the state, Manohar Lal Khattar said the ratio of girls per 1,000 boys have gone up from 850 to 933. But that's not enough, he said as the sex ratio is still not fixed.
"Earlier Cabinet Minister OP Dhankad would say we will bring girls from Bihar to marry into Haryana. Now some people are saying we will bring them from Kashmir but jokes aside, only after the sex ratio in our society is fixed, we can restore a balance," the BJP leader said.
However, news agency ANI had misquoted the chief minister saying, "Earlier bahus used to come from Bihar but now we will bring girls from Kashmir."
The BJP leader's comment was made at a state-level function which was held in Fatehabad, Haryana.
Manohar Lal Khattar's remark came after the Narendra Modi-led government revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which gave special rights to Jammu and Kashmir.
