BJP Kerala chief to take on Rahul Gandhi, actor Arun Govil party's face for Meerut

The BJP released its fifth list of 111 candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections across 17 states, naming its players against tough contenders in the Opposition. Kerala BJP chief K Surendran has been fielded against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat. 

Rajmata Amrita Roy, a member of the Krishnanagar Royal family who joined the BJP last week, is the party candidate from Krishnanagar. She will be contesting against Trinamool Congress leader Mahua Moitra.

The BJP has also given a ticket to Rekha Patra, a woman from Sandeshkhali who was a part of the protests against former Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan. She has been fielded from the Bashirhat Lok Sabha constituency.

Actor Arun Govil, who essayed the role of Lord Ram in the popular TV series Ramayan, has been fielded from the Meerut Lok Sabha seat. Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut for the Mandi seat, former Congress MP Naveen Jindal for Kurukshetra and actor Arun Govil for the Meerut seat were among the biggest names in the BJP list.

Former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay got a ticket from the Tamluk seat in West Bengal. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is the candidate from Sambalpur in Odisha and BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra from Puri. Former Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLA Sita Soren, the sister-in-law of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, will fight from the Dumka constituency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
