Congress issues whip for MLAs to attend assembly meeting or face suspension, Ruckus in Karnataka assembly, more

Congress has issued a whip asking all ruling coalition legislators to be present on all days of the budget session of the assembly or face suspension. It follows the allegations of renewed bid by BJP to destabilise the Kumaraswamy ministry in Karnataka.

It comes after nine Congress MLAs ignored the whip and skipped the legislature session on Wednesday (February 6), keeping the ruling coalition on tenterhooks on the opening day of the budget session.

The joint session of the legislature began on a stormy note with the opposition BJP questioning the legitimacy of the JDS-Congress government.

BJP members created a ruckus disrupting the address of Governor Vajubhai Vala, forcing him to cut short his speech.

The BJP MLAs were heard saying, "Go back, chief minister, go back."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday hugged and honoured 98-year-old Makhanlal Sarkar, one of the earliest and senior most members of the BJP. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
