DMK's MK Stalin urges PM Modi-led Centre to support UN resolution against Sri Lanka

DMK president MK Stalin has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to support the United Nations’ resolution against Sri Lanka for its war crimes and human rights violations.

MK Stalin released a statement on Sunday amid reports that Lanka was hopeful of India's support at the UNHRC session, saying that PM Modi's 'silence' over the issue has sent a big 'shock' among Tamilians. He said he was shocked to hear Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary claim that he expected India to vote in favour of Sri Lanka at UNHRC on the island nation's rights and accountability record.

Stalin said India must not take a stand favouring Sri Lanka, which would be "an injustice" to Lankan Tamils. India should vote in favour of the accountability and reconciliation resolution against Sri Lanka, he said in a statement. Also, PM Modi should take steps to see that support was canvassed in the UN body to bring amendments to that resolution to facilitate initiation of proceedings in the international criminal court against Lanka over war crimes, he said.
