What began as a project to upgrade the scam-ridden but useful Bofors artillery gun has ended with India's first-ever indigenous long-range artillery gun, the Dhanush. Built by the Gun Carriage Factory (GCF) in Jabalpur, the Dhanush bests the Bofors, which proved its worth during the Kargil conflict, on almost every benchmark, including range, design and automation. Six guns of the Dhanush variety are currently with the Indian Army for user trials and are being fired from diverse terrain ranging from high-altitude areas to desert regions.
