Ground Report: India Today visits Assam's biggest detention centre

A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that there were no detention centres being made for illegal immigrants in Assam and other parts of India, India Today TV found out that construction of the biggest detention centre at Matia in Assam's Goalpora district is on the verge of completion.

The Home Ministry in 2018 had sanctioned an amount of Rs 46.41 crore in order to construct this compound. Contractors involved in the construction work believe that this centre, supposed to accommodate 3,000 illegal immigrants will be ready for operations in the next couple of months. It spreads over a stretch of 28,800 sq ft of land at Matia, 129 km away from Guwahati, the capital city of Assam.
