Tamil Nadu's Amma canteens, a pivotal scheme launched by the late Chief Minister J Jayalaithaa, are dying a slow death under the watch of her successors in government, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and his deputy, O Panneerselvam.

The canteen chain provides lunch and dinner to the underpriveleged, but the cost of running the heavily subsidised system was pushed to civic bodies, which are facing financial losses. There are no queues at these canteens, and working hours have been reduced.
