India reports 86,052 fresh Covid cases, 1,141 deaths; tally above 58 lakh

India on Friday reported a single-day spike of over 86,000 cases and over 1,000 deaths, according to updated data on the health ministry’s website.
The country has reported 86,052 cases in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of cases recorded to 58,18,571. Of these, 9,70,116 are active cases while 47,56,165 people have recovered after getting infected. India’s death toll has also increased after a spike of 1,141 fatalities in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths due to Covid-19 in India stands at 92,290, according to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

The scene unfolded on the stage ahead of Suvendu Adhikari's swearing-in as West Bengal's Chief Minister in Kolkata. PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
