Vikas Dubey carries a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh and has political connections across parties in Uttar Pradesh. On the night UP police team was ambushed, he was understood to have been informed by "mole" in the police department.
As the police party reached his house around 45 km from Kanpur district headquarters, they were attacked with a barrage of bullets leading to the death of eight cops including a DSP. The police had gone on July 3 to arrest Vikas Dubey, who is accused in dozens of criminal cases including murder inside police station.

PM Modi also touched Sarkar's feet and presented a shawl to him as a mark of respect. In 1952, Sarkar was arrested in Kashmir while he was accompanying Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee as the latter was marching to hoist the tricolour there. BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya described the elderly party leader as "one of the earliest grassroots figures associated with the nationalist movement in post-Independence India."
