Tight rope between Karnataka govt, Centre over Lingayat's religious recognition

In a decision fraught with political implications in poll-bound Karnataka, the Congress-led State cabinet decided to recommend to the Centre the grant of religious minority status for the numerically strong Lingayat and Veerashaiva Lingayat community.

The Congress said that it has only fulfilled the long tem demand of the Lingayat community and that it is now upto the prime minister whether to give Lingayat its special status.

Karnataka government, in order to recognise this community as a religious minority under the National Commmision Minority Act, has recommended the same to the Central government.
