Yearender: 10 best Bollywood films of 2014

Queen
This was one of the best films of 2014.There couldn't have been a better day for this Kanagana Ranaut starrer - the film was released on Women's Day. The film is a story of a girl who goes on a honeymoon alone after being dumped by her fiance at the altar. Director Vikas Bahl so beautifully showed journey of self-realisation of a woman in the film.

The film got critical as well as commercial success. Kangana swept everyone off their feet by her acting in the film.


2014 was a year of mixed bag for Bollywood. From unconventional films to same old regressive Bollywood masala films, we saw it all. We bring you best films of the year. Hope you have seen them all because missing these films will be a sin.

Highway
Highway is the of journey of Veera, played brilliantly by Alia Bhatt, from the comfort of her home to the outside world. Veera gets kidnapped by a truck driver Mahabir Bhati (Randeep Hooda in his best form). Both of them carrying scars of their childhood do this journey of self-realisation together. The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, was liked by both critics and audience.

Haider
An adaptation of William Shakespeare's 'Hamlet', 'Haider' is Shahid Kapoor's career's best performance. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj, who is a master of adapting Shakespeare's work, the film set in Kashmir is the story of a young man who wants to avenge his father's death. From Tabu, Kay Kay Menon to Shraddha Kapoor and Irrfan Khan every one who was part of the film gave brilliant performances.

PK
Rajkumar Hirani and Aamir Khan's team once again created magic after 3 Idiots.  PK is a film that interprets religion and beliefs, through an outsider's eyes. PK, an alien, is like a child who tries to understand the ways of world. Rajkumar Hirani knows very well how to prove his point in a way that neither sounds preachy nor seems forced. He has done exactly that in the film and Aamir Khan being Mr Perfectionist is pitch perfect as alien. The film is very high on entertainment and has a social message too.

Aankhon Dekhi
Director Rajat Kapoor's small budget film was big on entertainment. Sanjay Mishra gave terrific performance as a man who believes only what he sees with his eyes. Seema Pahwa plays his wife. If you missed watching the film in theatre, go buy a dvd.

Filmistaan
Yet another film that was small in budget but very high on entertainment. The film depicts how Bollywood and love for Indian films is a common factor between Indian and Pakistan. Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the film shows how cinema can be the universal panacea for co-existence.

Citylights
Directed by National Award winning film Shahid's director, Hansal Mehta, Citylights is about a poor farmer from Rajasthan coming to Mumbai in search of livelihood. Rajkummar Rao as Deepak Singh is terrific as usual and even Patralekha surprises us in her debut.

Dedh Ishqiya
The sequel to Ishqiya, the film had the main characters from the prequel - Khalujaan and Babban. And new characters played by Madhuri Dixit and Huma Qureshi. The film was a treat to watch because of the brilliant performances by its lead actors . The film, directed by Abhishek Chaubey, got critical acclaim but was average at the box office.

Mardaani
Rani Mukerji made a solid come back with this film. She played the character of a senior cop in crime branch, in the film that deals with a serious subject of women trafficking. Rani was pitch perfect in her role as a woman cop.

Ugly
The year that started with Dedh Ishqiya, ended with Anurag Kashyap's Ugly. The film was released after a year long fight with the censor board. The film is about the kidnapping of a young girl, which unravels the complexities of human psyche and emotions. Lies, betrayal, fear, greed, anger, pride, lust, sloth - Ugly brings out the ugliness of every character, leaving a bitter taste in mouth.
