Yearender 2014: Films that redefined Bollywood

In the melee of big budget mindless movies like Humshakals, Kick, Happy New Year, Action Jackson and others, few films with small budget but big aspirations churned out in 2014, restored our faith in Bollywood.

Aankho Dekhi

Aankhon Dekhi written and directed by Rajat Kapoor was a moving tale of an old man living in old Delhi, and how his life and that of his family's gets affected when he chooses to not believe anything until he sees it.

Citylights

CityLights  directed by Hansal Mehta starring Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha in the lead roles is remake of the BAFTA nominated British film Metro Manila (2013). A dark and heart wrenching take of daily wage labourer's tough life in a metropolis.

Filmistaan

Filmistaan was a funny take on Indo-Pak relationship. An aspiring actor and diehard fan of Bollywood movies is kidnapped and held in the home of a Pakistani who deals in pirated Hindi films.

Finding Fanny

Finding Fanny by Homi Adajania was a road movie with five odd ball characters, searching for one man's childhood sweetheart.

Katiyabaaz

Katiyabaaz is a documentary film directed by Deepti Kakkar and Fahad Mustafa about the problem of power theft in Kanpur. The film received rave reviews from all quarters.

Mardaani

Mardaani starring Rani Mukerji showed a woman in a completely different light. A far departure from demure and breezy Bollywood heroine, Rani Mukerji was a tough no-nonsense cop in the film.

Miss Lovely

Miss Lovely directed by Ashim Ahluwalia is based on the sleazy and criminal world of Mumbai's C-grade film industry of the 1980s.

PK

PK starring Aamir Khan marked the return of Rajkumar Hirani who with his Munna Bhai series and 3 Idiots invented a new genre of films.

Ugly

Anurag Kashyap latest directorial venture Ugly shows the dark, sad and a bitter reality of our lives. Ugly is a path-breaking crime fiction and one of Kashyap's best so far.
