Delhi metro revamps blue line for a better travel experience
Delhi Metro's Blue Line is getting a major facelift, with modern tech upgrades, improved safety features, and refreshed interiors designed to elevate everyday commuting across one of its busiest corridors.

Commuters on Delhi Metro’s Blue Line can expect a smoother, safer, and more modern ride as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation rolls out a major mid-life refurbishment programme. The initiative focuses on upgrading some of the oldest trains with cutting-edge systems and improved passenger amenities bringing them in line with today’s standards.
WHAT IS THE MID-LIFE REFURBISHMENT PLAN?
DMRC has launched a large-scale retrofit programme covering 70 trains across the Red and Blue Lines. These trains, part of the earliest fleet inducted between 2002 and 2007, have already completed nearly two decades of service.
The refurbishment is being carried out in phases:
Phase 1: 12 trains upgraded
Phase 2: 18 trains completed, 9 more to begin soon
Phase 3: 22 Blue Line trains to be refurbished by November 2027
So far, 31 trains have been successfully upgraded, marking steady progress in the modernisation drive.
INSPECTION AND LEADERSHIP PUSH
The first refurbished train of Phase 3 was recently inspected by Vikas Kumar before being introduced for passenger service. The move highlights DMRC’s continued focus on maintaining quality and safety standards across its network.
MODERN INTERIORS AND IMPROVED SYSTEMS
The refurbishment goes beyond basic repairs. Coaches and driver cabins have been repainted and refreshed to address years of wear and tear, giving trains a cleaner, more modern look.
Key system upgrades include:
Advanced electrical panels for better performance
New jumper cables and connectors for improved reliability
Infrastructure ready for future tech upgrades
SMART TECHNOLOGY FOR PASSENGERS
Passengers will now benefit from smarter, more connected journeys. Trains are being equipped with:
IP-based Passenger Announcement and Information Systems (PA-PIS)
CCTV surveillance systems
LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps (DRM) and display screens
These features provide real-time updates on routes, station arrivals, and even enable communication with train operators during emergencies.
SAFETY GETS A MAJOR BOOST
Safety remains at the core of this initiative. Each coach is now fitted with a modern fire detection system, including smoke and heat sensors.
Additionally:
Old relays and MCBs have been replaced with advanced units
Systems have been upgraded to ensure smoother and safer operations
ADDED COMFORT FOR DAILY COMMUTERS
In a move that reflects evolving passenger needs, DMRC has introduced mobile and laptop charging points across all coaches making daily travel more convenient for working professionals and students alike.
With this ambitious refurbishment programme, DMRC is not just extending the life of its older trains but transforming them into modern, passenger-friendly spaces. As the upgrades continue, Delhi Metro commuters can look forward to a travel experience that blends reliability, safety, and comfort seamlessly.
