In a significant move to improve accessibility and ease of travel, Indian Railways has clarified that Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) can now travel in unreserved Divyangjan coaches of Mail and Express trains using a valid Unique Disability ID (UDID) card.

WHAT IS THE UDID CARD?

The Unique Disability ID (UDID) card, issued by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, serves as a standardized identification for persons with disabilities across India. It aims to simplify access to various government benefits and services, including travel concessions.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE UNDER THE NEW GUIDELINES?

According to the latest clarification, PwDs who hold a valid UDID card or those who are otherwise eligible for concessional fares—will now be considered valid passengers in designated Divyangjan coaches. This eliminates confusion around documentation and ensures smoother boarding for eligible individuals.

The rule specifically applies to unreserved coaches earmarked for Divyangjan passengers in Mail and Express trains. These coaches are designed to offer easier access and a more comfortable travel experience for persons with disabilities.

This decision is a step toward inclusive mobility, making train travel more accessible and hassle-free for PwDs. By recognizing the UDID card as valid proof, authorities aim to reduce barriers and promote dignity and independence in public transportation.

A STEP TOWARDS INCLUSIVE TRANSPORT

With this update, Indian Railways reinforces its commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. The move is expected to benefit thousands of passengers daily, ensuring that travel rights are more clearly defined and easier to exercise.
