Rajasthan's 'Palace on Wheels' luxury train to run in May, first time in 45 years
Rajasthan's famous luxury train Palace on Wheels is set to create history with its first-ever May run. The special summer journey comes after rising demand for heritage rail tourism.

Rajasthan’s iconic luxury train, Palace on Wheels, is set to operate in May for the first time in its 45-year history. Known as one of India’s most famous heritage trains, the Palace on Wheels usually runs between September and April because of Rajasthan’s extreme summer heat. This year, however, strong demand for luxury rail tourism has led to a special summer departure.
The six-day journey will begin from Delhi Safdarjung railway station on May 20 and cover several major destinations across Rajasthan.
The move marks a rare change in the train’s long-standing schedule and has created excitement among railway and travel enthusiasts.
FIRST MAY RUN IN 45 YEARS
Launched on January 26, 1982, the Palace on Wheels is considered India’s first luxury heritage train. It is jointly operated by Indian Railways and the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC).
According to Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, the train is running in May due to “significant demand”. Earlier, services were avoided during the summer because temperatures in Rajasthan often cross 42 degrees Celsius.
ROUTE AND JOURNEY DETAILS
The special Palace on Wheels trip will run from May 20 to May 25 as train number 00290 under Indian Railways’ Bharat Gaurav Train Policy.
The train will cover nearly 2,610 km during the journey. Key stops include Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittorgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Marwar Junction and Phulera. The trip starts and ends at Delhi Safdarjung station.
WHY THE TRAIN IS SPECIAL
The Palace on Wheels is designed to recreate the experience of royal travel once enjoyed by princely rulers. The luxury train features 14 saloon coaches, restaurant and bar cars, spa facilities and personalised butler service for guests.
Each cabin comes with modern comforts including air-conditioning, attached bathrooms, Wi-Fi, lockers and premium interiors inspired by Rajasthan’s royal heritage.
