Pakyong Airport in Sikkim opens its doors for tourists: Unmissable photos

If you have ever wanted to travel to Sikkim to experience its scenic valleys but couldn't because of lack of travel accessibility, then you can bid all your worries goodbye.

On September 24, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Northeast's first greenfield airstrip, Pakyong Airport. Situated at a distance of 30 km from Sikkim's capital Gangtok, it's India's 100th airport.

The airport has placed Sikkim on the aviation map of India and is situated at a height of 4,500 ft amidst the lofty Himalayas.

In order to build this scenic and probably India's most beautiful airport, Rs 605.59 crore was spent.

Special techniques like soil reinforcement and slope stabilisation were used in order to be in sync with the altitude it has been built on.

An engineering marvel in itself, the beauty of Pakyong Airport will make travellers fly to the state to marvel at its valleys.

Nestled among the clouds with a scenic view of Sikkim from its top, the airport is an architectural spectacle in itself.

The airport not only incorporates the beauty of the valley in its architecture, but also the culture of Northeast.

With the functions beginning in October, Pakyong Airport will definitely attract hordes of tourists to Sikkim.

The commercial operation of flights will commence from the airport in the first week of October, 2018.

Before this tourists flying to Sikkim had to fly to Bagdogra and travel more than four hours (128 km) by road to reach the city.
