Balaghat train disaster: Human tragedy overshadows statistical measure

Last fortnight's train disaster at Balaghat may merely be recorded as the biggest train accident in history, but as the death toll mounts unrelentingly, railway ministry officials and supporters of the chief minister are raising political dust over the cause of the accident. With varying theories bandied about it seems likely that the disaster, like any others in the past will collect dust as public fury recedes.

Historically, it may merely be recorded as the biggest train disaster in history. By last week, however, as the death toll in the Balaghat disaster - in which seven of the nine overcrowded bogies of 416 Down plunged into the swollen waters of the Bagmati river - continued to mount relentlessly, the human tragedy that unfolded completely overshadowed any statistical measure.
