During my growing-up years in the 70s, Indore was famously known as mini-Bombay, as it was surrounded by handloom mills. Our life used to revolve around these mills. I distinctly remember the sirens, used for summoning workers, would indicate what time of the day it was; we hardly ever used a clock. Sadly, these mills went bankrupt and now stand on disputed land.

The city was formerly known as Indreshwar, which was named after the Indreshwar temple constructed in 1741 by Ved Manuj. The present name, Indore, originates from the same temple. The city has a strong historical background and is famous for palaces and temples. Rajwada, a seven-storey palace built during the Holkar era, was half burned during the 1984 riots but was restored immediately.
