So many of them filled the streets and lived her life in their imagination. She became the anger and sorrow of a generation abandoned by hope. Even as she was melting away like the burning candles in protest squares, headline writers continued to keep her alive and visible by giving her a name, one that exuded fearlessness, heroism, and immortality. Alone in her lost struggle for life, she came back in millions as memories swarmed the last long night of India 2012. In the sobriety of the New Year morning, sighs of the damned yesterday could still be heard, and the absence of the woman whose face we have not seen but known in our imaginings became the overwhelming presence.<br><br>In death, she did not change India but empowered a generation whose anger echoed the poet: "After such knowledge, what forgiveness??? No woman should have paid such a price to start an uprising of emotions, to tell the living that freedom was the most exaggerated idea in this country. She too was part of that exaggeration till she boarded that bus. She did not do anything unusual by stepping into a bus in the big city. The unusual thing was that such a bus was run only on the roads of India. Here, laws are pervasive-even intrusive-but fear of the law is non-existent. The political babble of the New Year is all about tougher rape laws. We hear a lot about the possibilities of punishment, ranging from castration to execution. This is desperation of the political class which is fast realising its own imminent redundancy in the social market.<br><br><div class="itg-mosimage"><div class="itgimage"><amp-img  src="https://akm-img-a-in.tosshub.com/sites/media2/indiatoday/images/stories/2013january/flame_010513034152.jpg" alt = "Politicians in denial" height="425" width="650" class="" layout="responsive"></amp-img></div>Anonymity, we somehow think, is the safest house for the savaged.</div>It took the life of a young woman for our politician to discover, mostly in front of questioning television cameras, what it means to be a father or mother. Suddenly, the mourning politician mouthing platitudinous banalities became a figure of vulgarity. The words carried no conviction; they were just necessary reactions and they sounded so remote. We were not surprised because it was not the Indian politician we are familiar with. Society has never been part of his vocabulary. We are not used to politicians talking about broken societies or families or relationships or moral responsibilities in normal times. It was not that they lost the argument when the street erupted. They never had an argument. They had only slogans. When the street erupted, and when the media shared the anger, politics of simulated sentimentalism looked out of place. It was a rare, and hardly redeeming, sight of professional politicians trying to keep pace with the citizen. They could only try. It was as if they were just ejected out of a shell of denial into the sunlight of twenty-first century India.<br><br>The story of this young India is not as uplifting as all those rhapsodies about the demographic dividend. The so-called young politician, in his ideas and articulation, seems to have nothing in common with the street fighter of his generation. He is not the change India has been waiting for. He is no different from his elders, in his moral insensitivity and cynicism. Instinctively, he should have been there with the raging section of his generation, his natural constituency. He refused to break out of the comfort zone of the system sustained by his elders.
