The appearance comes after actor Sanjay Dutt appeared before the NCW on April 27 in the same case. During the hearing, Dutt apologised to the Commission and committed to sponsor the education of 50 tribal girl children as a step towards contributing to social welfare and women’s empowerment.

The matter relates to objections raised over the song Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke from the film KD: The Devil. The song drew criticism over its allegedly obscene lyrics and choreography, and the issue later reached Parliament after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting said the song had been banned. Following the backlash, the makers removed the Hindi version from YouTube.

According to submissions made before the Commission in Dutt’s hearing, he said he had no prior knowledge of, or control over, the song’s lyrics, translation, composition or final presentation, and that his role was limited to performing as an actor under contractual obligations. He appeared before the Commission with his legal team led by Advocate Hemant Shah and said he respected the dignity of women and social values.

As part of his response, Dutt also assured the Commission that compliance on the education support would be reported within three months. Through his counsel, he further said he would incorporate safeguards in future projects to ensure that no work associated with him disrespects women, children or any individual. Nora Fatehi has now also appeared before the NCW as the Commission continues its proceedings in the Sarki Chunar row.
