It was a crossover no one saw coming: Queen Camilla and Sarah Jessica Parker sharing a moment worthy of a Sex and the City episode screenplay inside the New York Public Library — one of the most iconic cultural landmarks in pop culture history.

Queen Camilla was in New York for an event hosted by her literacy charity, The Queen’s Reading Room, when she was joined by Parker at the historic library. The setting carried an added layer of nostalgia for fans of Sex and the City, as it is famously the place where Carrie Bradshaw’s fairytale wedding unravels in the 2008 film.

This time, however, there were no runaway brides or heartbreaks, just books, conversation, and an unexpected royalty-meets-fashion icon experience. The two were seen walking down the library’s grand staircase in a relaxed, almost cinematic moment that felt straight from New York fiction.

For the occasion, Sarah Jessica Parker leaned into soft nostalgia in a baby-pink polka dot dress with frilled detailing, subtly evoking Princess Diana-era silhouettes. Queen Camilla opted for a more traditional elegance in a navy crepe silk coat dress by Fiona Clare, accessorised with a Britannia brooch once belonging to Queen Elizabeth II.

The event brought together around 100 guests from the worlds of literature, publishing and culture, including authors, broadcasters and creatives, as Hello! Magazine reported. British and American literary voices gathered under one roof in celebration of reading and storytelling.

Introducing the Queen, US television host Jenna Bush Hager said: “Books are part of her DNA.” Camilla, in turn, described the New York Public Library as “one of the world’s greatest libraries, and somewhere I have always wanted to visit,” before reflecting on her earliest literary influences.

“The first Americans I knew and loved were the characters I met in my treasured children’s novels: Little Women, What Katy Did, Charlotte’s Web,” she said. “I knew even then that books are the best friend you can have—in good times and bad.”

For Parker, the visit carried its own emotional resonance. The actor, forever linked to Carrie Bradshaw, noted how meaningful it was to be at a place so central to New York’s cultural identity and so deeply tied to her own screen legacy.

“It’s great for all New Yorkers,” she said, praising the Queen’s focus on literacy. “Anytime we have an opportunity to talk about libraries and literacy, I’m thrilled we get to be in this extraordinary building and highlight this extraordinary repository.”

Reflecting on meeting Camilla, Parker added, “She seems to love reading as much as a lot of us greedy readers. She showed so much hospitality. To have her shine a spotlight on reading and the relationship between a reader and a book. It’s incredibly meaningful.”

The New York stop is part of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s wider US visit, with the royal couple continuing engagements across Washington and New York.

Introducing Camilla, US TV host Jenna Bush Hager said: "Books are part of her DNA." The Queen went on to describe the New York Public Library as "one of the world's greatest libraries, and somewhere I have always wanted to visit," before speaking about the beginnings of her love for reading.

She said: "Indeed, the first Americans I knew and loved were the characters I met in my treasured children's novels: Little Women, What Katy Did, Charlotte's Web... I knew, even then, that books are the best friend you can have – in good times and bad."

Speaking ahead of the meeting, Sarah said the Queen's visit was "great for all New Yorkers," adding: "I think anytime we have an opportunity to talk about our libraries and talk about literacy... I'm thrilled that we get to be in this extraordinary building... and highlight this extraordinary repository for these documents."

Reflecting on an earlier meeting, the actor added: "It was, for all of us, a thrill... she seems to love reading as much as a lot of us greedy readers... she just showed so much hospitality... to have her shine a spotlight on reading and the relationship between a reader and a book and how it changes lives and enriches lives and cultivates empathy and curiosity, I'm so grateful."

And while Sarah Jessica Parker has long embodied Carrie Bradshaw’s fictional world of love, fashion, and Manhattan dreams, this time she stepped into a very real story — one where royalty, reading, and a touch of Sex and the City magic briefly collided inside the city that never sleeps.

After the reception, the Queen and Sarah viewed the library's collection, including rare literary works and artefacts linked to America's 250th anniversary. The visit ended with the Queen presenting a handcrafted soft toy named Roo to complete the library's Winnie the Pooh collection, a gesture that delighted the young children present.

Sarah reprised the character of Carrie Bradshaw for Sex and the City spin-off titled And Just Like That... (2021-2025). The actor was also seen in the Sex and the City film series, released in 2008 and 2010, respectively.

Sarah was honoured with Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes 2026, for her impact on television.
