Author Jenny Han asks fans to stay away from The Summer I Turned Pretty film set

Prime Video and Jenny Han have asked fans to stop sharing the location of The Summer I Turned Pretty film set and turning up during filming. They said crowding and online posts are disrupting production and creating safety concerns for the cast and crew.

Filming for the The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is underway, but the makers are asking fans to take a step back – literally. After several behind-the-scenes clips began circulating online, author Jenny Han and Prime Video have urged viewers to stop sharing the filming location and visiting the set.

The appeal comes after fans were spotted gathering at the North Carolina shoot, where actors including Lola Tung, Christopher Briney, Gavin Casalegno, Rain Spencer and Sean Kaufman were seen filming.

In a statement shared on May 5, the show’s official account highlighted how such visits were disrupting production and raising safety concerns. A video accompanying the post showed the words “privacy please” written in the sand.

“We love the excitement, but sharing locations and visiting set disrupts filming and creates real safety concerns for our cast and crew (sic),” the caption read.

It further read, “We’re working hard to create a protected bubble to make the best movie possible. Please help us protect the magic of Cousins until it’s ready to be shared (sic).”

Han echoed the concern on her Instagram Stories, stressing the impact of on-set interruptions. “When people come to set, film, and share videos, it disrupts the work. It makes it harder for actors to get into character and causes unnecessary anxiety (sic),” she wrote. “We often have to stop production to clear crowds from the shot, which breaks the crew’s focus.”

She added, “This story means a lot to me, and I know it means a lot to you too. I want to give you the best version of this movie. Please help protect our process (sic).”

This is not the first time the franchise has addressed fan behaviour. Ahead of the show’s third season last year, Prime Video had issued a message asking viewers to “keep the conversation kind” and avoid online harassment of the cast.

The upcoming film will serve as the concluding chapter of Han’s bestselling trilogy, moving away from the earlier plan to wrap up the story with a third season. Announcing the decision last September, Han said a film would better capture the final phase of protagonist Belly’s journey.

While details about the movie remain limited, the story is expected to pick up after the events of the Season 3 finale, which saw Belly (Tung) choose Conrad (Briney) over Jeremiah (Casalegno). The ending hinted at a new beginning for the couple, but also left several relationships unresolved.

As production continues, the team is hoping fans will give them space to complete the film – currently expected to release in 2027 – without further disruptions.
