Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s Karuppu ran into trouble on its scheduled release day on Thursday, 14 May, with its 9 am shows cancelled at the last minute despite having special government clearance for early screenings. Fans were disappointed after learning that morning shows were cancelled at the last minute, as the film did not make it to screens on time due to financial hold-ups.

The disruption followed financial and distribution issues in the final hours before release. While the makers officially cited “unavoidable reasons”, reports pointed to unsettled dues and other pending payments that delayed the film’s clearance for theatrical exhibition.

The film’s immediate release now depends on whether the producers can settle the reported dues in time for later shows.

The timeline of the delay

The problems became public on Wednesday, May 13, when reports emerged about financial hurdles affecting the release. Director RJ Balaji said he was confident the producers would resolve the issues by nightfall. But as the night progressed, speculation over a postponement grew after major theatre chains began removing the film’s listings from online booking platforms.

At around 1 am on Thursday, producer SR Prabu of Dream Warrior Pictures posted an apology on X, confirming that the 9 am shows had been cancelled due to “unavoidable reasons”.

The film recorded a promising start with the advance bookings, especially in the B and C centres. According to trade website Sacnilk, Karuppu recorded Rs 7.92 crore (with blocked seats) in India. As per reports, the overseas collections remained solid as well.

Due to financial issues, shows are being unlisted in theatres in India and overseas.

Why was the film delayed

At the centre of the delay is a reported Rs 10 crore in unsettled dues in Tamil Nadu. In the Tamil film industry, the KDM, or Key Delivery Message, is the secure digital key required to screen a film in theatres, and it is often withheld until pending payments are cleared. The unsettled dues appear to have become a key obstacle in Karuppu reaching theatres on time.

The financial strain was reportedly compounded by unpaid location charges linked to EVP Studios near Chennai. The production house owes a huge sum, reportedly around Rs 50 crore, to multiple people. These dues are said to have created a legal and financial bottleneck that prevented the final clearance needed for distribution.

The setback was more significant because the film had already received special permission for 9 am shows, raising expectations among exhibitors and audiences for an early start on release day.

What happens next

Producer SR Prabu is now working to clear the financial woes, while RJ Balaji has expressed disappointment but remained hopeful that the issue could be resolved later in the day. Theatre owner and distributor Tirupur Subramanian, said the industry was looking at a 12 pm or later release, depending on an update expected at 10.30 am.

At the same time, many fans voiced their frustration on social media after waiting more than two years for the film’s release.
