Thalapathy turf: Why Chennai's Nehru Stadium was the apt stage for Vijay's crowning
Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium hosted Vijay's oath-taking as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on May 10, 2026. The ceremony turned a fan-favourite film venue into the stage for a major political shift.

Chennai buzzed with anticipation on the morning of May 10, 2026, as Joseph Vijay, natty in formals, took to the stage at the city's Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. It was a moment few could have imagined even a few years ago: Thalapathy Vijay, born Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, taking oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
The actor-turned-politician’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was invited to form the government by the state Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar the day before, after he cobbled the numbers necessary for an absolute majority. His party had earlier emerged as the single-largest party after the 2026 Assembly elections with 108 seats.

HOME OF VIJAY'S MEGA FAN MOMENTS
For millions of Vijay fans, this was not just about politics, it was poetry in motion. The venue, Nehru Indoor Stadium, has been no stranger to the star. It has been the beating heart of his cinematic milestones over the years.
Think of those unforgettable audio launches. The josh was sky-high. The energy was electric. When Varisu’s music was unveiled here in December 2022, thousands packed the stands with unmatched fervour, chanting his name as confetti flew and policemen struggled to hold back the crowds.
Catch a glimpse here:
At the event, Vijay delivered one of his signature message-driven speeches with gratitude and warmth. He narrated a touching “kutty story” about a father and his children to explain the true meaning of love. “Love is the biggest weapon in the world,” he told the roaring crowd.
As the frenzied crowd erupted, he called the love of his fans his biggest strength, even his “addiction". He left the audience with a powerful line on criticism: if people oppose you, it often means you’re on the right path.
Little did the crowd know then how deeply that message would resonate years later, as Vijay would emerge victorious in a stunning mega win that brought him to the threshold of power.

A COMEBACK, A CROWD, A CARNIVAL OF FREEDOM
The Varisu audio launch also marked a significant personal comeback for Vijay. After he briefly stepped away from social media, fans were eagerly waiting to hear directly from their Thalapathy.
Their prayers were finally answered when he returned to X in December 2022, with a video from the audio launch, delighting millions.
Here's the clip:
Similar scenes had played out in 2017 during the Mersal event at the stadium. A massive early turnout and an electric atmosphere marked one of the biggest and most frenzied events in Vijay’s career up to that point.
“All roads leading to Nehru Stadium,” the reports said. The venue was packed to capacity with thousands more outside. The energy was likened to a festival (thiruvizha).
VIJAY'S SPEECHES, BIGGER THAN EVENTS
However, not all of Vijay’s audio launches took place at Nehru Stadium. While Jana Nayagan was held in Malaysia in 2025, Master unfolded at The Leela Palace in Chennai in 2020, and Bigil at a city college in 2022.
The audio launch of Bigil at a popular engineering college in Chennai turned into a massive hit, but it was Vijay’s fiery speech that became the biggest talking point across Tamil Nadu.
Watch his fiery speech here:
Delivered with strong political undertones, the speech featured indirect digs at the then-ruling ADMK government, which did not go down well with the authorities. Consequently, the college has came under intense pressure from the government, which has demanded an explanation for allowing such a politically-charged event inside an educational institution.
The Sarkar audio launch at Sairam Engineering College in October 2018 was equally unforgettable. Thousands of fans descended on the venue, turning the campus into euphoria.
Speaking about clean governance, corruption, and the need for genuine leadership, he left the audience stunned with lines that hinted at his larger political aspirations. The event sent shock waves across Tamil Nadu and is still remembered as the moment when Thalapathy’s political voice first rang loud and clear.
A STAR TURNS LEADER
Nehru Stadium, though, has been special. Whenever Vijay entered the arena, he would stride onto the stage, deliver those signature motivational speeches – part hero, part philosopher – urging fans to chase dreams, stay united, and rise above challenges. The stadium wasn’t merely a venue; it was a temple where Thalapathy connected directly with his people.
He would begin with his iconic line, “En nenjil kudiyirukkum Nanba, Nanbigal” – addressing his fans as those who live in his heart. Speaking as their “Ungal Vijay”, he turned every speech into a deeply personal conversation, in a way that made millions feel seen and valued.
Now, that same stage witnessed a profound transition. The man who once mesmerised audiences with larger-than-life roles – fighting corruption, championing the underdog – stepped into the ultimate real-life role.
From delivering punch dialogues in films to crafting policy for 7 crore Tamils, the journey feels destined. Fans see it as poetic justice: the venue that amplified his voice as a superstar now echoed with his oath as Chief Minister.

This full circle carries deep emotional weight. In Tamil Nadu, where cinema and politics have long danced together, Vijay’s story stands unique.
The stadium, with its history of hosting sports, concerts, and grand gatherings, has now seen one of its most significant chapters yet – a non-Dravidian party leader assuming power in a state long defined by two major parties.
From the informal yet close-to-the heart "En nenjil kudiyirukkum" to the weighty silence before “I, Joseph Vijay...”
As Vijay took that solemn oath, the stadium stood a silent witness to transformation.
It is here that a superstar’s journey completed its most dramatic arc. Tamil Nadu watched, hopeful and captivated, as one of its brightest sons started the most challenging role of his life.
